POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Director of Engineering is responsible for maintaining the entire hotel property, including the physical building structure, all mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems and related equipment with particular attention towards safety, guest satisfaction, security, and asset protection. In addition, you’ll be accountable for managing the budget, capital expenditure projects, preventative maintenance, and energy conservation.
DUTIES: not limited to but including the following (duties are considered essential functions):
- The Director of Engineering must be able to provide direction to all functions of:
- Maintenance Technicians, including, HVAC, Locksmith, Electrical, & Plumbing trouble shooting,
- Landscaping and Gardening Associates, including, irrigation, drainage, & gardening trouble shooting.
- Safety & Loss Prevention Associates, including, guest communications, lost & found procedures, emergency procedures.
- Conducting walk-throughs and visually assessing the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of the physical structure of the hotel, all mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems and any other related equipment
- Informing the General Manager and hotel department heads on a regular basis regarding the specific and overall condition of the building structure, related systems and equipment offering prudent, cost-effective proposals for maintaining these systems
- Ensuring all projects, including, but not limited to, routine maintenance, repairs, replacement, and renovation projects, are completed on time and according to specifications.
- Testing the saltwater pool for chemical balance and operational condition
- Maintaining effective Energy Management and Preventative Maintenance programs and conducting special training for other operating departments on the safe and efficient use of equipment and energy in the hotel
- Working closely with other departments to ensure coordination of activities.
- Supervising Engineering associates including hiring, training, evaluations, development, and disciplining.
- Preparing and adjusting weekly work schedules in accordance with staffing guidelines and labor forecasts
- Authorizing requests for personal time off, holidays for team members, schedule changes, overtime, purchase requests and expenditures
- Reviewing guest comments and ensuring that problems are identified and corrected in a timely manner.
- Acting as the safety coordinator for the entire hotel includes ensuring that all emergency equipment and systems are inspected, tested and certified per standards.
- Maintaining a safe and working environment throughout the hotel for all associates, enforcing safety guidelines and building awareness about safety
- Ensuring compliance with OSHA, Fire & Safety Laws
- Recommending capital expenditures and acquiring bids as appropriate
- Managing expenses within approved budget guidelines
- Assessing critical repairs and facilitating an immediate and cost-effective response.
- Implementing and managing procedures and practices that ensure quality assurance for work performed by hotel maintenance teams.
- Ensuring that there is an adequate inventory of parts, supplies, tools, and materials available through effective ordering.
- Responding to guest requests in a timely, professional, and friendly manner to help ensure that we are meeting or exceeding guest expectations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 4 years’ leadership experience in the hotel maintenance field preferred.
- Must have a proven skill set above a facilities Technician.
- Must be a leader of teams and motivator of managers. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized and non-standardized situations.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals.
- Should have good interpersonal skills.
- Software Systems Knowledge, including: Scada operation of the Waste Water Treatment Plant, Irrigation and Well Pump Computer, Utilities, Information/Technology Hardware, Microsoft Office 365, Opera, HotSOS, Canary, Revinate, Avendra, iBuy, ProfitSword.
- General Engineering Department knowledge, including: HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, IT Hardware, PBX, Cameras, WiFi, Locksmith, Low-Voltage, Fire Alarm Systems, Elevators, Kitchen Refrigeration and Equipment, Waste Water Treatment, Irrigation, Drainage.
- Must have the ability to multi task, organize and maintain an inventory of replacement parts and materials.
- Must have a desire for learning and personal growth.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must provide valid document(s) to work in the US.
- Must meet legal age requirements for the position.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Engineer in a hotel, hospital, or building, including two years in a supervisory capacity.
- High school diploma or equal to a GED.
- 4 – year college degree or trade equivalent preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Must have brand experience at properties of similar size and quality. Must have a thorough knowledge of all types of mechanical equipment such as chillers, boilers, water softeners, and refrigeration equipment. Must have extensive working knowledge of building systems to include but not limited to; HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, painting and carpentry. Must have excellent supervisory and interpersonal skills. Ability to work a varied schedule that may include evenings, nights, and weekends.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Must speak and communicate in English.
- Ability to speak in Spanish preferred.
- Must be able to clearly communicate with guests, management and coworkers.
CERTIFICATES & LICENSES:
- Valid California Driver License is required.
GROOMING & UNIFORM:
Employee must wear uniform at all times during scheduled hours. Uniforms are the property of Bernardus Lodge & Spa. Uniforms that have been tampered or destroyed will be the responsibility of the employee and disciplinary action will apply.
- Hair must be clean and kept at a reasonable length.
- No extreme dying or bleaching of hair is permitted.
- Fingernails must be clean and well-trimmed at all times.
- Antiperspirant or deodorant must be worn.
- Any self-inflicted marking (tattoo) on the body cannot be observed by the public.
- Cologne or perfume may be worn at a minimum.
- Nametags must always be worn, unless your department has a specific policy to the contrary.
- Pants and professional shirt and closed toe shoes are required.
Base Salary Range: $85,000 to $93,000, based on background and experience.
